There are many benefits to practicing meditation for adults but…… What are the benefits for children? Well, there are many of them. The general aim of meditation is to help children learn how to relax and gain some mental clarity by themselves. There is also the “Feel Good” factor. Whenever children meditate they become much calmer and stress free enabling them to go about their daily life feeling good about themselves and who doesn’t want that for their children? Here are a few of the benefits that could help your child develop and grow to their full potential. Benefits that can serve them well now and in the future, to help them create a strong and centred foundation. To be the best person they can possibly be….. Self-Awareness As children grow, they learn who they are and what makes them happy. Meditation teaches children self-awareness. By looking inside themselves, they discover what they are passionate about and what direction they would like to follow in life. They can understand their own reactions better and start to understand why they behave and act the way they do. They develop independence and can follow their own intuition instead of just following the crowd. Children learn to become more aware of their own bodies and their reaction to stress so that they can better take control of their emotional and physical states. This ability to calm themselves when they experience stress is an invaluable tool, and leads them to have a more positive outlook on life and to be more confident. Creativity Children are naturally very creative, but often and for whatever reasons they don’t fully tune in to their full creative abilities. Meditation leads to an increased ability for children to tap into their natural creativity. It’s been found that after doing short meditation exercises, children performed better on tasks that required them to generate new creative ideas. It also helps them to visualise their ideas, the things they would like to do, the things they would like to see happen in their own lives. It gives them the ability to create whatever their passion is and make it happen without feeling that they would be jeered at by their peers. Meditation teaches our Children self-confidence and enables them not to worry too much about what other people may think. Calm All of our children use entertainment technology – Xbox, iPad, video games, texting, TV, etc… The list goes on and on. On average this can last for up to 7.5 hours a day! Their brains are literally being fried with the amount of useless information some of these games put out, especially the ones about death and destruction. Is this really what we want to teach our kids? Is this really what we want our kids to think the world is actually like? Children are especially susceptible to the side effects of too much technology, such as: shorter attention span, less patience, anxiety and nervousness. So, it is very important to counterbalance all this exposure to technology with some quiet time, and meditation is the perfect balance for all of this. Studies have shown that stress levels have been reduced when kids meditate and report that all of the children who practiced meditation felt much more calm and relaxed. Social Skills and Self-esteem Meditation helps kids learn how to pay attention to their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. In turn, they are able to be more empathetic and more compassionate toward others. They even become better listeners. It can be particularly beneficial in the treatment of anxiety and depression. Children who regularly meditate develop the ability to empathize with and show respect for others and show significant boosts in self-esteem. We have questions every day from children who visit our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/NewHorizonHolistic Some of the questions can be quite serious and involved, whilst others are just saying how much they enjoy the meditations. The point is, that these kids feel confident enough to ask the hard questions and are not afraid to speak out. Giving kids the tools to help fend off negative thoughts and behaviours; to build self-confidence; to add focus, and to learn the value of treating others (and themselves) with respect and appreciation is a gift they will have for the rest of their lives. Since starting New Horizon, we feel very privileged to have been able to help children find themselves and to help them grow beyond what society expects them to be. Our meditations are now listened to all over the world and are being recommended by therapists to their clients, even schools around the globe are teaching their students to meditate with the help of our meditation videos. So why not help your child to learn to meditate? Why not meditate with them? You will find peace, clarity and a wonderful sense of calmness...Now who wouldn’t want that?! Just wanted to say thanks for the great stories. I am 6 months pregnant, so my kids often are still up and running at bedtime while I can’t keep my eyes open. For a while, I was having to wake myself back up to make them sleep because trying to settle them down had me snoring first. With the stories you tell, they are happy to hear the stories and settle down and sleep very quickly. I still fall asleep faster than they do sometimes, but when I wake back up to check on them or their dad comes in to sleep himself, they’re fast asleep now. It is a real blessing. We’ve been using the stories for the last three weeks.
